Position Summary:
Engineers and Conductors are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of freight trains, placing rail cars to facilitate loading and unloading, and makeup/breakdown trains in a rail yard, customer facility or similar locations.
General duties include:
• Review instructions from dispatchers and other train crew members
• Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
• Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars
• Work with customer service to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
• Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
• Observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting movement of trains
• Make adjustments with moving and positioning of rail equipment
• Maintain a professional demeanor and positive attitude while interacting with coworkers and customers
Job requirements:
• 18 years of age or older
• High School Diploma or GED
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Ability to work from written and verbal instructions
• Must be able to work with a team, take direction from supervisors, adhere to work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules
• Must be able to work varying hours, including weekends and overtime as required
• Must be able to occasionally work in varying weather conditions
• Must be able to submit to and be able to pass a drug screen
• Maintain a good attendance record
• Must be able to pass a background check
• Must be willing to wear required personal protective equipment
Physical requirements:
• Must be able to stand and walk on uneven surfaces for extended periods of time
• Must be able to carry and lift 30 lbs. frequently and push and pull 75 lbs. frequently
• Must be able to carry and lift occasionally 50-90 lbs., push and pull 250 lbs. and grip 100 lbs.
Rate of pay:
• $24.00 to $27.00 depending on experience and relevant qualifications
