Sep 18    A Taste of Rose Hill
The Geneva Historical Society's special food-focused tour, A Taste of Rose Hill, will run on the third Tuesday of the month during the 2018 season at Rose Hill Mansion. The tour explores the history of food consumption and production during the Swan family's residency at Rose Hill from 1850 to 1890. It is one hour long and will be offered on May 15, June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18 and October 16 at 2 p.m. This special tour is not the same as our regular tour.

On the tour, visitors will learn how the Swan family produced and preserved different types of food on their farm, and how food was prepared and presented at their table. We will explore how these processes shifted over the 19th century as elements of food production, preservation, and preparation were mechanized and standards of presentation rose. Part of the tour will also focus on 19th-century beliefs about the connection between food, health and gender roles. The tour will include samples of the scents and tastes of 19th-century-style foods.

Admission for the tour is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors. As space is limited, reservations are required for A Taste of Rose Hill. They may be made by calling Rose Hill Mansion at 315-789-3848.

The Rose Hill Mansion Gift Shop is open whenever the house is open. The shop carries historically-inspired and locally made items, as well as souvenirs, history books, jewelry and home decorative items.

Sep 26    "The Yanks Are Coming": Hearing America Change, 1914-1919
Description - In conjunction with the Geneva Historical Society's exhibit, A Changing World: Geneva and World War I,  nationally-syndicated radio show host Michael Lasser will speak about the songs Americans enjoyed during this war that ended a century ago. The songs of the First World War reveal the attitudes, values, and beliefs of their time, especially since it was America's most musical war. They trace the changes in American attitudes from “I Didn’t Raise My Boy To Be a Soldier” in 1914 to “Over There” in 1917 to “How Ya’ Gonna Keep ‘Em Down on the Farm” in 1919.
For more than 35 years, Michael Lasser has spoken about popular music as social history — about songs and the America they reflect — at museums and universities, bringing popular music to bear on American history in illuminating ways. Mr. Lasser is a lecturer, writer, broadcaster, and critic. He is the co-author of America’s Songs: The Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley, and the author of America’s Songs II: From the 1890s to the Post-War Years. His nationally syndicated public radio show, Fascinatin’ Rhythm, has been on the air since 1980 and won a 1994 Peabody Award. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he is the former theater critic for The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, and speaks often at museums and universities around the country. In 2010, he was named a Thomas P. Johnson Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Rollins College. The University of Rochester Press will publish his newest book, City Songs and American Life, 1900-1950.
This lecture is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities and is free and open to the public.
