May 2    Lecturer to Review History of Medicine
In conjunction with the current exhibit, Medicine and Illness: Health Care in Geneva, the Geneva Historical Society's spring lecture series focuses on illness and its treatment. The final lecture in the series is “18th- and 19th-Century Medicine: From the Revolution Through the Civil War” by Les Buell on Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m.

This program will feature Civil War reenactor Les Buell. He will share the real story of medicine during this period. Mr. Buell will combine lecture and hands-on demonstrations featuring the tools of the 19th-century trade.

Les has been a reenactor for nearly 30 years. He is a member of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Civil War Surgeons. He has presented programs on a variety of topics related to 19th-century medicine, including: Canadian surgeons in the Civil War, women and their changing role in medicine, and glass making and mineral waters of the 19th century. He has also authored several articles for Teaching Canada magazine.

The lecture series is free and open to the public. It is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams Fund for Programs in the Humanities. For more information about this program or the series, visit www. genevahistoricalsociety.com or call the Geneva Historical Society office at 315-789-5151.
