| Nov 3 Rose Hill Mansion by Candlelight |
On Saturday, November 3, 2018, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Geneva Historical Society will open Rose Hill Mansion to visitors after dark. Experience the house as the Swan family and their servants would have at night, in (electric) candlelight and without a guide. Go at your own pace to explore the first floor of the mansion and spend more time in your favorite rooms. Get a sense of life in the era before electric light. Tour guides will be stationed throughout the house to answer visitors' questions. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the last entry is at 8 p.m.
This special event includes light refreshments. The Carriage House Gift Shop will also be open for the event. Admission is $10 per person and $7 for members of the Geneva Historical Society. It is recommended that visitors bring a flashlight. For more information call 315-789-5151.

Once a working farm, the house and surrounding grounds at Rose Hill are open May 1 to October 31 for guided tours. Built in 1839, the elegant Greek Revival house was the center of a busy and productive farm at mid-century, occupied by the Swan family from 1850-1890. Twenty rooms of the house are restored and furnished in the Empire style, popular from the 1820s to 1850s.
Rose Hill Mansion is located at 3373 Route 96A, about a mile south of Routes 5&20, near Geneva, New York. Rose Hill is administered by the Geneva Historical Society. Families will rotate through stations throughout the museum featuring hands-on activities exploring Finger Lakes' life in the 1800s. Topics will include music, transportation, schooling, and fun and games. The program is aligned with the New York State standards in Social Studies and designed primarily for children in grades K through 6. Families with children of all ages are welcome to attend, as there will be a variety of activities geared towards younger learners as well.

| Nov 27 The Perfect Storm: WWI and the Flu Pandemic of 1918 |
In conjunction with the centennial of the end of World War I and the Geneva Historical Society's current exhibit, A Changing World: Geneva and World War I, the Historical Society's Fall Lecture Series will feature programs about the war.
Finger Lakes Community College professor Robert Brown will examine the largely overlooked relationship between the Great War of 1914-18 and the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918. The focus will be on how the First World War created the ideal conditions for a pandemic situation to emerge in 1918 and how, in turn, the unprecedented sickness and mortality flu generated adversely impacted upon the conduct of the war
This lecture is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities and is free and open to the public. |
