Events for August 2016
Finger Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce
Aug 2    Straight No Chaser
"If the phrase "Male A Capella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses ... think again.  Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait - aced nor straight - faced, but neither are they vaudeville - style kitsch.  SNC is the real deal, the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense and with a sense of humor."

Aug 13    Farm Heritage Day

This August, the Geneva Historical Society will hold the fourth biennial Farm Heritage Day at the Johnston House. This event gives visitors, particularly families, the chance to sample 19th-century farm life through games, period crafts and farming activities, presentations, and exhibits. The activities will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

Programming at Farm Heritage Day will reflect life and work on the Johnston family’s farm in the 1800s. Hands-on activities will help visitors connect to the past—learning about the region’s history while having fun. Planned activities include: operating an antique cornsheller, fanning wheat with an antique wheat fanner, and testing milking skills on a simulated milk cow. Throughout the day there will be activity stations or presentations on 19th-century music and housework. There will be crafts and 19th-century games for kids to try out and the opportunity to meet a variety of farm animals. Representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension will share information about modern farming and food production, while the Ward W. O'Hara Museum will have information about their agricultural museum and programs. The Johnston House and the Weaver Drain Tile Museum will be open to visitors throughout the day. Farm Heritage Day will take place out of doors, rain or shine, on the grounds of the Johnston House.

Aug 16    19th Century Food Tour
This summer the Geneva Historical Society will introduce a new special tour, A Taste of Rose Hill, focused on the history of food and food production at Rose Hill Mansion between 1850 and 1890. Aug 20    19th Century Food Tour
This summer the Geneva Historical Society will introduce a new special tour, A Taste of Rose Hill, focused on the history of food and food production at Rose Hill Mansion between 1850 and 1890. The tour is one hour long and will be offered on four dates: Tuesday, July 12 and August 16 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, July 16 and August 20 at 11 a.m. This special tour is not the same as our regular tour.

On the tour, visitors will learn how the Swan family produced different types of food on their farm and how food was preserved, prepared and presented at their table. We will explore how these processes shifted over the 19th century as elements of food production, preservation, and preparation were mechanized and standards of presentation rose. Part of the tour will also focus on 19th-century beliefs about the connection between food, health and gender roles. The tour will include samples of the scents and tastes of 19th-century-style foods.

Admission for the tour is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children 10-18. Children under 10 and members of the Geneva Historical Society are free. As space is limited, reservations are required for A Taste of Rose Hill. They may be made by calling Rose Hill Mansion at 315-789-3848.
