Oct 03   Beginning Pressure Canning Class
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County is offering a beginner pressure canning class on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 4:30 PM.  This will be a very basic introduction to the principles of pressure canning, including hands-on preparation and processing.  A vegetable available at that time will be canned, and participants will be able to return to the office and pick up the cooled and sealed jars the following week.

With increased interest in both “buying local” and home canning, it is important to know the current recommendations, processing times and procedures.  Pressure canning is required of non-acid foods, including most vegetables and meats.  The class will cover how to determine which method of processing is appropriate for which foods, equipment needed, and the steps involved in pressure canning.  Cost is $10.00 per person or couple, and participants are required to sign an acknowledgement of risk waiver form before the class.

To register, call Cornell Cooperative Extension, Yates County at (315) 536-5123 by Wednesday, Oct. 1st.

Oct 18   Flashlight Tour of Johnston House
Did you ever wonder what it was like to live before electric lights? How did people find their way around after dark? Do you enjoy the occasional, short-term bout without electricity? Do you like to "rough it"? Well, if you’d like to see the 1822 Johnston House by moonlight and flashlight, join the Geneva Historical Society on Saturday, October 18 for a special flashlight tour of the house.

Built by Scottish immigrants John and Margaret Johnston in 1822, the Johnston House originally sat on an important farm where John Johnston became well known for advocating better farming techniques. The Geneva Historical Society will offer a special family-friendly tour of the house from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The tour will include a few hands-on household activities typically done after dark in the 1800s, such as reading, writing and sewing. Tours will start about every 20 minutes, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be light refreshments available following the tour. The tour costs $5 per household. The house is unheated and parts of the program occur outside, so dress for the weather. Bring your flashlight and relive history in the dark!

The Johnston House is located at 3523 East Lake Road, near Route 96A. For more information about this program, call the Geneva Historical Society at 315-789-5151.

A living historian, he portrays Confederate Major General Isaac R. Trimble's civilian and military life with the organization.

Oct 23   Antiques Club Presents Stereoscopic (3-D) Photography on October 23

Diego Ruiz of Stereoscope Journey will present a program on Stereoscopic (3-D) Photography on Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Geneva History Museum, 543 S. Main Street, Geneva. The program, sponsored by the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes, is free and open to the public.

Diego and his wife, Kari (a plein air painter), have been traveling the country and the Finger Lakes region with tools in hand creating stereographic documentation of the culture of each region.

Through extensive study, Diego has improved on a photographic process that dates back to the 1830s, leading to the release of multiple 3-dimensional books and the start of the stereoscopic New York Waterfall series.

On October 23, Diego walk us through a collection of Finger Lakes region images, and it will become clear just how important it is to keep projects like these alive for future generations. Attendees will be able to view the projected presentation in 3-D with the provided special glasses. Books will be available for purchase at a discounted price.

The Geneva History Museum is handicapped accessible. Refreshments will be served. Come and enjoy a beautiful recreation of an early American pastime.
