Nov 07   FLFCU Presents an Artist Exhibition by Kathy Collins

An opening reception with the artist will be held Friday, November 7th, 2014 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Credit Union’s Main Office.  Light refreshments, including a wine tasting by Fulkerson Winery, will be provided.

Kathy Collins was born and raised in Geneva.  She started working in the darkroom at Geneva High School and continued on to Film Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Since graduating in 2009, Kathy has worked freelance as a wedding and portrait photographer in the Finger Lakes area, as a staff photographer for The Office of Communications at Hobart and William Smith, and cover/feature photographer for Community Health Magazine.

Inspired by city, ocean, and landscape, Kathy’s work reflects the environments she comes upon, letting scenery guide her.  She enjoys experimenting with color contrast, light, and finding the abstract in nature. “My camera goes where I go, because you never know where the perfect shot may pop up.”

All the prints on display along with more of her work are available on her website www.photographybykathycollins.com and her Facebook page Photography By Kathy Collins. Photos can be ordered in various sizes as prints or canvas, matted or un-matted ready to frame.  To purchase any of the images that are on display at FLFCU, contact Kathy directly and arrangements will be made to have them available to you as soon as possible.  Note cards are also available for purchase. You can contact Kathy Collins at her email at kc9716@gmail.com, or call at 585-737-9748. Stop in the Credit Union to see the exhibit, which will continue to be on display through mid-January. Nov 07   Womans Roles During War Years Lecture
The Geneva Historical Society's 2014 Fall Lecture Series concludes on Friday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. with the lecture "From Rosie the Riveter to Harriet the Happy Homemaker: Women on Screen During and After World War II," presented by Rob Edelman. Edelman will explore how the role of women in American society changed during World War II, as seen through film clips of the era. This lecture is free and open to the public and is made possible through the New York Council for the Humanities' Speakers in the Humanities program with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Before the Second World War, women were expected to marry and remain at home to keep house and raise children, while their husbands were the breadwinners. During the war, however, women worked assembly lines, entered the military, and experienced personal and economic freedom that previously had been the exclusive domain of men. Peacetime meant a return to “normalcy,” and the expectation that women would cheerfully exchange their paychecks for aprons, regain their lost “femininity,” and return to their traditional roles within the American family. Clips from the era's Hollywood movies will illustrate the manner in which women were expected to act during and after the war.

Speaker Rob Edelman is a Lecturer in film history at the University at Albany. He offers film commentary on WAMC Public Radio, is a longtime contributing editor of Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, and has written books and articles on freedom of the press and film.

Since its launch in 1983, the New York Council for the Humanities' Speakers in the Humanities program has brought distinguished scholars on a wide range of humanities topics to audiences across New York State.  All Speakers events are free and open to the general public. Each year, hundreds of non-profit organizations and community groups take advantage of this program, including community centers, religious organizations, museums and historical societies, and libraries. The Speakers program is an easy, affordable way for organizations to bring top humanities programming to their community.

Nov 11   Community Conversation - Geneva and World War II

This fall the Geneva Historical Society will host a continuation of our program, Community Conversations: Dialogues About Geneva History, with a new installment focused on the history of Geneva during the Second World War. Gather with veterans and members of the community to discuss Geneva and Genevans’ service in World War II. From the construction of the Seneca Army Depot and Sampson Naval Training Station, to the service of hundreds of men from Geneva, to the boomtown growth of the city, World War II had a profound effect on Geneva and its residents.

This informal program is an opportunity to learn and to share. Following a brief overview of the history of Geneva during the war, Society staff will share some of the material from our collection related to World War II. We will then open up the conversation to questions, personal stories, and observations from people in attendance. We are collaborating with the American Legion to present this program and will hold it at the American Legion Winnek Post #396 at 1115 Lochland Road, Geneva, NY.

The public is welcome to attend the discussion and take part in the conversation. We especially encourage veterans of World War II to join us. Participants are can bring documents, photographs, or other materials related to Geneva’s war years to share. For more information about the program, call the Geneva Historical Society at 315-789-5151.
