Lake to Lake Women (Formerly Geneva Business & Prof. Women) is inviting the community to participate in the 2015 Community Birthday Calendar featuring a sponsored picture of "The Former Hotel Seneca" where Geneva BPW first met when the local chapter was chartered 85 years ago.  Calendars are $4.00 each and listings -- i.e. birthdays, anniversaries, in memoriams are $.50 each.  For further details you may contact Nancy Taylor, Chairman at 789-2899 before August 10th.

Aug 01   4-H Fishing Day

4-H Fishing Day – Friday, August 1st, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Calling All Fishing Enthusiasts (or All Wanna-Be-Fishing-Enthusiasts!) 

Barb and Al McGuffie will be leading this event, starting at 10:00 AM in the Yates County Building Auditorium (417 LIBERTY STREET PENN YAN, NY).  Participants will start at the very beginning, “Why go fishing?,” then learn the basics of equipment, safety, and identification of different fish.  After practicing casting out lines, participants will eat lunch (bring your own!) and then head to a pond in Dundee to do some fishing of their own.  If successful, the fish will be prepared and participants will have a taste of something really fresh and delicious before returning to the Yates County Building by 5 pm.

The cost is $8.00 per 4-H member or $18.00 for a non 4-H'er (which includes enrollment in 4-H). Youth 5-7 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  Please call Yates County Cornell Cooperative Extension at (315) 536-5123 by Tuesday, July 29th to sign up!

Aug 01   FLFCU Presents an Artist Exhibition by Kevin Colton

The Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union presents an artist exhibition by local artist, Kevin Colton.  His work is on display at the FLFCU Main Office (Geneva Branch) lobby and Loan Department.  An opening reception with the artist will be held Friday, August 1st, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Credit Union’s Main Office.  Light refreshments, including a wine tasting by Fulkerson Winery, will be provided. 

Kevin Colton, chief photographer at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, has been a professional photographer for the past 36 years. He has followed the changes in technology from black and white to color, film to the digital era.

His work has earned a wide-range of honors and awards, among them being selected as a 2014 Featured Artist at the Davis Gallery at Houghton House, Hobart and William Smith Colleges; as a 2014 Finalist in the International Canyons contest sponsored by Viewbug; second and third place in the 2013 Seneca County Arts Guild Photography Show and second place in the 2012 show; 2012 Case Gold Medal winner in single photo category; and 2011 Case Silver Medal as Photographer of the year.

Colton, who has taught amateur and student photographers for the past 30 years, recently authored and illustrated an instructional guide for the Journal of the University Photographers' Association of America.

Aug 02   Top to Bottom Tours Rose Hill Mansion
For the 2014 season the Geneva Historical Society will offer a special Top-to-Bottom Tour of Rose Hill Mansion on the first Saturday of the month, beginning May 3. These tours will be an opportunity for visitors to see areas of the house not open on our regular tours, including the basement and cupola. Tours will be held at 11am, 12:30pm, 2:00pm and 3:30pm and are included in regular admission.
 
The tour is appropriate for adults and children 15 years and older. Please be advised that there are many stairs to climb and some confined spaces included in the tour. Because of these limitations, space on the tour is limited, and reservations are required. Reservations may be made at the Geneva Historical Society at 315-789-5151 or at Rose Hill after May 1 at 315-789-3848.

Discover downtown Geneva’s past this summer with the Geneva Historical Society. The Society’s archivist, Karen Osburn, and volunteer Joseph Rivera-Ramos will lead walking tours of downtown Geneva’s business district during July and August. The tours will run rain or shine the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The July 9 tour will cover the eastern half of the downtown business district. The tour on July 23 will focus on the western half of downtown, and the tours on August 13 and 27 will cover Exchange Street. Find out what downtown was like in the past, what happened to some of its historic buildings, and why Geneva still has so many 19th-century buildings. Discover the stories of those that remain, and how downtown businesses were once the lifeblood of the community and its economy.

Each tour will start at 7 p.m. outside Finger Lakes Gifts and Lounge at 60 Seneca Street. The cost is $5 per person. Payment can be made in advance at the Society office or at the beginning of the tour. Please bring exact change or a check if you pay the night of the tour. Reservations are appreciated. This summer the Geneva Historical Society is hosting a free concert series on the lawn at Rose Hill Mansion. For three Sundays, the grounds of Rose Hill will be alive with music and fun. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening of music to end a summer weekend in the Finger Lakes.
Allen Hopkins rounds out the series on Sunday, August 24 with a performance of folk music, including American traditional, Celtic instrumental, blues, bluegrass and historical tunes.
